Our History-Incorporated June 29th, 1953
In 1952, a few parents of children who were developmentally disabled sat down to map out a brighter future for their sons and daughters. From their concern and commitment, Kelso Activity Center was born. Over the decades, Kelso grew from a single school to the multi-facility system of comprehensive programs and services that is now Arc Fresno, an asset to the community and a visible expression of the possibilities of human potential.

People with developmental disabilities have a wide range of learning disabilities and physical handicaps. They may have mental retardation, autism, epilepsy, neurological disorders or cerebral palsy. Approximately 97% of the clients served by Arc Fresno have mental retardation, which is defined as "slow or delayed in development or progress," and may additionally have other handicaps which impair their functioning. People with these developmental disabilities simply have to work harder and longer to attain skills that most people take for granted. But they can and do learn.

To meet the needs of this group, roughly 3% of the population nationwide, Arc Fresno has evolved into a diverse organization combining innovative programs with sensitive care to train people who are mentally retarded in critical life skills and work habits to further their independence. This is not an impossible dream. It is estimated 75% of the people with disabilities can become self supporting, and an additional 15% partially self-supporting, when given appropriate training early in life. Arc Fresno is placing clients in the workforce in ever-increasing numbers on a daily basis.

In addition, the agency places great emphasis on prevention. Over 100,000 infants are born with mental retardation. Over half of all these births can be prevented with proper genetic and nutritional counseling. Arc Fresno is strongly committed to an aggressive program of on-going public awareness and education to create greater acceptance for and understanding of mental retardation. Finally, Arc Fresno is a powerful advocate working to ensure that people who are mentally retarded are guaranteed the same rights as any citizen.
